There are currently no dedicated accredited educational programs in Arizona that allow for direct qualification as a Radiation Therapist. Students who choose to study elsewhere for an associate or bachelor’s degree in Radiation Therapy may return to Arizona to obtain professional credentials and a license to practice in the state.
However, there are several options to obtain a first degree in Radiologic Technology in Arizona. This would provide an entry to the field of Radiologic Technology with the option to take further courses to specialize in Radiation Therapy at a later date. For example, the Central Arizona College located in Coolidge offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Radiologic Technology which is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
How to become a licensed Radiation Therapist in Arizona
Over 75% of states, including Arizona, require Radiation Therapists to be licensed. In Arizona, licensing is the responsibility of the Bureau of Radiation Control which is subject to the Arizona Department of Health Services. To apply for a license to practice in Arizona, Radiation Therapists must be able to provide proof of current ARRT credentials and proof of legal residency in support of their notarized application.
How to obtain professional credentials as a Radiation Therapist in Arizona
Professional credentials for Radiation Therapists are offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
ARRT requires individuals seeking credentials to provide evidence that they meet specific educational requirements, meet the ARRT ethical standards, and pass an examination.
Educational Requirements – individuals seeking credentials must hold an associate degree or better in any subject from an accredited educational institution. In addition, ARRT requires candidates to demonstrate that they have completed a specific educational program for Radiation Therapists. An associate or bachelor’s degree in Radiation Therapy is the most straightforward way to satisfy both requirements simultaneously.
Ethical Requirements – Candidates are required to review the ARRT Standard of Ethics document and answer specific ethics-related questions on their application.
Examination Requirements – Candidates must pass a four-hour computer-based examination. The exam covers treatment planning and delivery, patient care, the principles of radiation treatment in oncology, and radiation safety. A scaled score of 75 is required in order to pass. Three attempts to pass an ARRT exam are allowed within a three-year period.
Once Radiation Therapists have received their credentials from ARRT, these must be maintained by completing ARRT-specified Continuing Education credits every two years and Continuing Qualification credits every ten years.
